BACKGROUND ON THE FORUM TOPICS
* High performance schools and other public buildings.
Across the country communities are making decisions to improve the quality of their schools and public buildings. Leadership in Environment and Energy Design (LEED) rates and certifies building performance. Results are: improved energy performance lowering operating costs; improved air and light quality impacting attendance and interaction; and minimized building impact on the environment through smart water and rainwater usage. Improvemnets are often achieved for the same cost as conventional buildings when an integrated whole building design approach is in place.
*Green Building- New and Exisiting Homes and Developments.
Green Building programs began nearly 15 years ago. The National Association of Home Builders published Green Building Guidelines in 2005. North Carolina has a green building program through NC Solar Center: Following their guidelines energy efficiency of over 30% above code can be produced resulting in more affordable home ownership.
*Renewable Energy Production.
Local biodiesel production enhances local agricultral opportunities, provides a stable non-imported fuel price and cleaner air. The production of local fuel creates jobs and economic development, reduces our dependence on foreign oil, and improves our security.
Large scale renewable electricity production in Chatham County is a reality with increasing potential. The development of solar thermal, wind and hydro generation have taken root across the state and options open to Chatham are on the rise. Economic development based on these technologies proves to be a sound investment for communities looking to conserve their environment without losing their quality of life.
